Working Goats for Camera Critters

Last Friday, my SkyWatch sunsets were photographed right after going by this island, where the area residents have hired some goats to keep the weeds down until some time in July.

They were munching on a tree of some kind when we approached.   They stopped and came over for the goat food pellets some people gave them.

They also put fresh water in the buckets.

  1. Are the goats actually eating the 'bad' stuff (briars and such) as intended, or just eating the 'good' stuff (grass)? I've been around goats a lot in my life and they have such amusing personalities!

  2. Goats are always fun to watch and always appreciative of food treats given to them. So....you were going by this island. What island and where? Just took a look at your Wordless Wednesday and enlarged one of the photos to see what your little guy's black t-shirt said.....I Do All My Own Stunts. Cute! And the photo of him with the bike helmet is priceless.

  3. How funny! You have a petting zoo there! I heard about blackberry bushes eating goats. I'm not sure it is true (those bushes are thorny!). Blackberry bushes are everywhere in the NW, and it's almost impossible to get rid of them.

  4. I wonder if they cost more than a lawn mower. I guess they're a must have if you have lots of land.

  6. Goats don't love grass as much as leafy greens they find at eye level. At least mine don't. We have to mow the barnyard regularly just so we don't lose them. Fun to see them come to you in a somewhat wild setting!

  7. Cute little guys. I thought the top one was a dog at first.

  8. At one of the high schools by us they brought goats in to eat the blackberry bushes.
I guess it's a good way to get rid of weeds.

  9. Thank you for the memories! I had a great uncle who had goats. They kept his yard so neat and tidy! They also got into a lot of mischief, but what fun I had as a kid playing with the goats. Thanks!

  10. We had goats when I was a kid, they are a lot of fun and can do a good job cleaning up the under brush. They look pretty happy.

  11. Sue: Cite captures of the neat goats, I like the way they got up on the rail.

  12. Love them goats. They remind me of my goats at home. Yes, that would be the most practical thing to do. Hire goats for keeping the grasses low. More eco friendly.

Thanks for leaving kind comment at Skywatch Friday #47.

  14. I wish we had room for a goat or two - I think they're fascinating beasts.

  15. Sue - Did you know that goats are the new in-thing to replace mowers? Google uses goats to mow their grass and the State of Maryland is using them to "mow" the grass around some sensitive wildlife areas. Cool stuff, for sure!
