Who Was Enjoying the Nicer Weather 2/17/09

There have been so many awesome bird pics posted lately, and I keep commenting that I seem to be only seeing sparrows, so, I thought I'd post some pics of them. There is a dove family I saw a week ago, but haven't since, that hangs out in my veggie garden when the weather warms up, maybe before. I haven't seen any robins yet, but someone in my area has. In warmer weather I also see cardinals, and blue jays in our yard, and I hear woodpeckers. There are also geese, I think that live in the nearby cemetery, that fly overhead.

This rabbit was in my new bed that day, and was very slow in getting away from me.

This was what I saw when I first went out:

After looking me over, the squirrel went over to the corn, and ate a little before going up the tree, as I stepped off the porch.

I am seeing more green under the leaves, but it's too soon to remove them.  I think the blogs that are showing little seedlings coming up are causing me to yearn for spring to get here more than the full grown blooming flowers are.  I plan to get some lettuce, spinach, radishes, and kale in soon.  It's a bit early, but I like to take a chance with my first crop, because I figure I can always replant if I lose it.

  1. Wow, cute critters! I love the first squirrel pic the most. He looks like he's about to bow to you and introduce himself. Or maybe he's giving thanks for the food he's about to eat? :) Good luck with your early crops, I like your daring but sanguine philosophy!

  2. Sue, these pictures warms the heart.
I love your first picture with birds on the fence. Not easy to catch this kind of scene but it's so true.

  5. Great bird and bunny photos, I'm tired of squirrels. I am one of those with little seedlings, it's got down to 24 here last night so, again with the sheets!!

  6. We have many of the same critters in our yard. Add in some deer and red squirrels and I think it would be a pretty close match. Someone has also been rummaging through my compost pile but I didn't see any animal footprints in the snow so it's hard to be certain. I assume a raccoon, but I could be wrong. Thanks for your visit to my blog. It seems we have a lot in common.

  8. Good morning, gals,
I have to agree with Sweet Bay. The squirrel was rising up with indignation that I was about to invade his or her territory.

I am glad I don't have deer. It looks like they do more damage than rabbits or squirrels. There are some that eat on the plants at church. They seem to have plants they choose over others, like some have posted. The favorite at church seems to be the autumn joy sedums in the spring. They do recover, though, and still bloom in the fall.

    Have a great weekend!

  12. Thanks, Tatyana

Catherine, I thought the sparrows were cute too. Maybe they were waiting for me to move so they could go back to the feeder. I can't remember if they were already there when I went out.

Thanks, Debbie, Sometimes the squirrels seem too tame for me, and then they don't seem so cute. They scare me a little

  13. My mom had a whole tree full of fat robins the other day. But we have many that overwinter here. As long as they have a food supply, they'll stay. Still, it's good to see them.

  14. Hi Kylee, I still would like to see more kinds of birds here. I think we need to get some different kinds of seeds. I got some safflower seeds, but we haven't put them in a feeder yet. The squirrels supposedly don't like safflower. We'll see.
