Last Tomato

Our grandson picked a bunch of green tomatoes in October, when we were about to have freezing temps.  When our daughter came over, she did better than Larry and I did at eating them as they ripened.  I had to throw away a few that spoiled.  This one,  I kept looking at, wondering if it was any good.  The Gardener on Sherlock Street recently did a post on the tomatoes she had on her counter, which made me renew my interest in the last tomato on my counter.  Well, finally, today, I checked it out.

I wish I would have taken the first photo from the place this tomato spent the last couple of months.  I don't know why I didn't.

After the first cut, I had hopes that it was still OK to eat.

It was not as sweet as a fresh vine ripened tomato, but it was a nice December treat.  The salad was from the store.  I'm pleased to be able to eat lettuce again, after having problems with my jaw this summer.  The night guard I got from a TMJD dentist seems to be helping.

Happy New Year!   Oh, and my parents are celebrating 60 years of marriage today.  I don't think they read my blog, but I wanted to mention it anyway.  That's quite an accomplishment!

  1. I, too, picked a bunch of green tomatoes before we had freezing temps. They are starting to ripen now. We have some Sweet 100s and some Celebrity and some Lemon Boy. I had forgotten about the Lemon Boys and was surprised to see the pretty yellow tomatoes. Can't wait to give them a try :-)

  3. My last few were a bit tough. I ate some green, and always like to see how long they keep.I plant all of mine from seed, as well as peppers, so I am looking over a few new ones to try.I made a steak last night and used my last seasoning from Misty's, so need to get over that direction and get more.I hope you have a good New Year enjoying time with your family.

  4. That's a great looking winter tomato! I think the homegrown green-saved ones still taste better than the ones you can get in the grocery store.

  5. Yea!!!! It looks good on that salad. Celebrating New Year's Eve with a tomato from your own garden in NE is really cool.
Congratulations to your parents on 60 years. My parents celebrated 60 years this year too at the end of August.
    Happy New Year!

  8. Tomato in December? What a heroic tomato! I am suffering without good tomatoes. I don't remember them being so bad in the stores. Almost all of them have a little hole and start rottening very fast, starting from around that little opening. Do they inject anything in tomatoes to make them ripen? Anyway, I wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year with good harvest, including tomatoes!

  10. Hello Sue - here I am as promised :)

What a treat to visit your blog - I'm also going to be signing myself up as a follower.

Congratulations are certainly due to your Mum & Dad on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. A truly wonderful achievement!

My parents celebrated their 56th this year and, as with yours, I don't think mine read my blog either, or certainly not regularly. They seem to be afraid of the internet ;) and so wouldn't ever leave a comment for me! Pity, as they live in Australia and part of why I'd started my blog was to share my garden with them ;)

Your salad looks delicious BTW - just what I could have enjoyed today in our hot climate. Sorry to hear you've been having "jaw" problems, but good to know this is resolving itself.

    Have a HAPPY 2011!!!

    Hugs,

    Des xo

  14. That tomato looks luscious to me, too! Happy Anniversary to your parents -- that's such a wonderful milestone.

The agastache 'Cotton Candy' is not from seeds. Terra Nova sent me the trial plants for my garden and it is the best agastache, IMHO. Since I got it in fall 2009 before it was going out to the public, I think it should be around the nurseries for 2011.

    Happy New Year!

  18. I once kept my tomatoes going until Dec. 12 (in Mississippi you can do that if you work at it!), and finally gave up and picked about 20 green tomatoes, which I gave to my mother. She made a green tomato pie for Christmas, which looked like an apple pie at first glance, but was definitely not as good. No more green tomatoes for her! And nice blog, I just found you, it's good to see some of us are still out here blogging.

  20. That tomato looks ripe and Juicy.
I used to have a tomato plant in my house. I don't know how it grew in my house. It gave us a few tomatoes and was dead due to insects. Our tomatos weren't this big.
    Happy anniversery to your parents!

  22. My tomatoes are all gone now. I was going to pull them all out, but my Aunt suggested I just leave them there and let them decompose and add something to the dirt.

Good looking tomatoe, too bad about the taste.

  23. That tomato looks so good. I haven't had any good tomatoes since about September.... We had such a hot and dry summer that nobody around here had many good home-grown tomatoes this year... I LOVE the home-grown ones.

Congrats to your parents. My hubbys' folks have been married 70 yrs. Dad is 98 and Mom is 90.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  24. Oh a garden tomato in winter, what a treat! I just refuse to eat a tomato during the winter. Those hothouse tomatoes are watery and have no taste at all.

    Hope you enjoyed your treat!
