Christmas for the Birds

I recently bought a nice pair shoes, and Larry, a coat, so we decided those would be our Christmas presents.  A week before Christmas, KJ, our grandson and I went to a store to get some presents for his parents, aunt, and grandpa.  Awhile back, I got KJ a new toothbrush, then he told Grandpa he needed a new one, too.  So, I had him pick out a toothbrush and toothpaste for Grandpa.  Then, he went into an aisle where there was bird food, and he picked up a suet cake.  I asked if he wanted to give that to Grandpa, too, and he nodded his head.  I had him pick up another.

I didn't remember if we still had a suet feeder, then had an idea for KJ to buy my parents a suet feeder and suet cakes from a local business, The Wild Bird Habitat Stores.  I also put the link to the owner's blog in my sidebar.  He hasn't posted in awhile, but I want to go back and read his articles.  Larry and I want to learn more about feeding birds instead of being hit and miss like we have been.

When I recently asked Larry when he was planning on getting the feeders out, he said he wasn't sure, but he wished we had a place to put them where we could see the birds better.  I hadn't been too much in a hurry to get the feeders out, since they have plenty of seed heads in the yard to enjoy.  I figured since it's almost January, we should be getting the feeders out.

Anyway, KJ had gotten up very early, and was too tired to go shopping, so I showed him the types of feeders online.  I was going to have Larry take him, and I had asked Larry to pick out a suet feeder for KJ to get for me.  Since that didn't work out, I went and got a feeder and suet for my parents.  I picked out a squirrel proof one to be for me.  I also bought Larry the feeder in the first photo so we could see the birds eating.  He forgot that the suet feeder was supposed to be for me, so since I had a package for him, he went out and bought me a bunch of chocolate and a container for them. ;o)

I was finishing my lunch today, when I noticed Larry was putting food in the new feeder.  I wish I'd have noticed earlier to get a better photo, but did have my camera close by, and got this one.  I then went around taking photos as he put more feeders out.  He hasn't gotten all of them out yet, but at least we have some out now.  I also bought some safflower seeds, which Larry put out later, after these photos were taken.

This suet feeder holds 2 cakes.  I hope the squirrels don't knock it down trying to get to the suet.

Since I spent over a certain amount, I got a free sock feeder and a bag of thistle seeds.

I got the fruit feeder at an estate sale this summer.  I had planned on it being a decoration, but Larry very sweetly cut an apple this morning to put in it.

I wonder if the squirrels will realize the corn is for them, and the apple is for the birds.

I think this is one of the feeders that was Larry's dad's.

Now, I hope the birds find the feeders soon.

Have a great week!  I've been watching coverage of the big snow storm in the east.  I hope you all have heat and electricity, or will soon.  If you aren't home, I hope you get there safely, and without too much delay.

  5. I really like the corn cob feeder. I will have to check to see if I can find one for my elderly parents, as they feed the birds and the squirrels. It keeps them occupied over the winter.
Enjoy your new feeders, what a wonderful gift.
    Get ready for snow here?

  8. i put a 6"x 1/4 " lad bolt on a piece of wire and attached it to a tree limb. I can screw the whole ear of corn on this and keep lots around the yard, hoping the squirrels leave my seed feeders alone.I set shepherds hooks like you did all over the yard to hang various feeders. It s fun to sit out and watch them, but I hang one near my bedroom window to amuse the cats.

  11. You should soon have a great variety of birds visiting. I will be interested in seeing if the one that attaches to the windows will attract them.

I had to quit hanging feeders on my shepherd's hook. The cats began stalking it and I knew that was trouble.

We feed the birds and enjoy it so much. I don't feed the squirrels........they are on their own here.

  12. Thank you so much for the kind comment Sue, and I have to say I feel the same way about you and your garden!!! I am much more a sewer than a gardner, though I do love my plants. I wish I had your eye and dedication though, and I just love admiring your garden. I do hope you'll forget about that crooked seam and try again! I have made lots and lots of uglies, lol*, but it takes practice and sometimes several attempts. I've found the second go at a project usually bears better results than the first. ;) Not to mention it adds fuel to the crafting fire!!!

  13. Looks like the birds are in for a feast if they visit your house, Sue! I've been noticing lots of bird activity at the new feeder I put up in the backyard--I have to re-fill it nearly every day. But I've been disappointed in not seeing many at all out in front where I can take photos from my front window. I'm hoping the woodpeckers return this winter.

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas, Sue!

  14. Lucky birds! I cant' wait to see your pics of the birds enjoying them! We have several feeders out in the yard, but no birds come near our house, because of the herd of cats that surround our property :-(

  18. What a careful and considerate habitat you've created! I would love to take care of the birds, but with our cat who hunts, I couldn't do that and feel responsible!

No snow, despite snow dances, and a week off from school. Kids are waaaay disappointed.

  20. I need a new toothbrush too... but it is because mine mysteriously vanished! I've even crawled around in the floor and looked under the rug. No idea!

These are great photos, I really like the corkscrew corn feeder. Never seen one like that before.

  21. I think squirrels think it all belongs to them! I've had to move to squirrel proof suet feeders....they seem to work, but the woodpeckers prefer the ones with tail feather support. I hope your Christmas was grand~Happy New year Sue! gail

  24. That is a great collection of interesting feeder all right. Unfortunately thi is a bummer of a subject for me today as have returned from 10 days with the grandkids in Colorado we found our Minnesota yard buried under 2 feet of snow and most of my feeders buried as well. Worse yet the regular birds see to have all fled someplace else. I hope they return.
