Some Commotion in our Yard

Tuesday, when I was taking photos of some blooms, the birds in our tree were excited about something.  Different kinds would land on a branch and chirp loudly, then fly away.  I tried to take their photos, but only one, of a robin, turned out OK.  The worm was an added critter for the photo.

Heidi got excited, too, and at one point, tried to get up the tree.   Then, I saw a squirrel all agitated.

That's not what Heidi was after, though.  I looked up and saw a cat!  No wonder all the other critters were agitated.

The cat kept going back and forth in the fork of the tree, and the squirrel kept dashing around scolding it.

Larry came out to see what the excitement was, and I told him I was thinking about getting the hose to squirt the cat to get it to get down, but Larry was afraid it would fall out of the tree.

Finally, the cat skidded its way back down the tree.  It had a collar on, but I don't know whose it is.

I couldn't get a good photo of it once on the ground.  It skulked away, looking to be in a grumpy mood.

Did I get a thank you from the squirrel?  No, it turned around and scolded me!

Wednesday, I took some photos of a couple birds through a window.  They didn't turn out so well.  I have 2 to post, but I'm not sure if these are of both or just one of the birds.  I don't remember what kind of birds they are.  Do you know what they are?

  1. The squirrel looks like Bat Squirrel or Spider Squirrel. He's not that much smaller than the cat. The last two pictures look like that of a male House Finch.

  3. Love the critter photos. The bird is a male house finch. We have those here.

I finally bought a tripod and have it set up right near the computer which is where the large window onto the 'jelly porch' is. I use the Zoom macro feature and have taken some pretty good (for me anyway) pictures.

  4. No thanks from the squirrel and the cat was likely ticked off that you had ruined its dinner. Great critter images Sue. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Never a dull moment in the great outdoors! Great pictures. Although that first one took me a while to figure out.

I could be wrong but that could be a young purple finch.

  7. The comment about the squirrel turning to scold you next made me chuckle. They have such attitudes!

  8. What fun! The squirrel looks like the fox squirrels we get in our garden. They're quite a bit bigger that the regular grey squirrels. It took me a while to figure out the first photo too. I thought the bird was deformed until I zoomed in and saw the worm, lol. I bet the cat was sorry he missed out on dinner.

  9. I love your series of photos demonstrating what was going on, and you tell it most amusingly! I especially like the photo which has the cat AND the squirrel in it! You sure have quick shutter-fingers!!

  10. Those are cute shots of the drama in the tree. Last year a little orange kitten climbed way up in one of my trees, and ended up being taunted by a number of magpies at the ends of the branches. They seemed to be taking turns luring him out to the smaller branches.

  11. Love the shots of the cat and the squirrel! The squirrel must have been happy to 'win' the tree.

  12. Wonderful series of photos, The squirrel is a pretty color. I believe your bird is a House finch. The males usually have the red color.

  13. That cat had some tricky Camouflage going on, he was the same color as the tree! Nice shots!

The little birds are House finches, I had daily visits from them back in the winter when I feed my feathered friends more often.

  16. This was such a cute post. I felt like that cat blended right in to the tree -- exact same color!

  18. Now that kitty is a real stinker to disturb your critters that way! It got up to 92 here today, and after the cold winter we had, it was most welcome. Bring on the heat, I always say. Love it!

  20. Once in awhile, we see a stray cat come up to drink from our waterfall or sleep on the front porch. It always flees quickly at the sight of any person, so it must be wild.

  21. Hi Susan! Fun post and pictures! I was curious to learn who was causing all the commotion. That cat looks kind of mean. Was he hunting for a bird? I think so.
